Italian Summer Sangria

Summer is on it’s way and the days are filled with warmth of the sun. Sangria is always a hit at any backyard venue.

What is sangria one might ask? Well it is a usually a combination of wine, chopped fruit, a sweetener and a small amount of brandy. To me it is a socially acceptable late-afternoon libation that finds it’s way periodically into meal time and onto the evening. Not often all in the same day, but sometimes. You have been warned.

There are many different variations that you can make with white wine, red wine, rose wine, fruit juices, and any complimenting liqueurs. I thought about an Italian inspired combination since the dinner plan was for grilled pizza and caesar salad. It was not overly traditional in the ingredients, but still had the base roots of what sangria should be.

The overall result was a pitcher perfect combination that is not overly sweet or tart like some sangria can be. It contains a fruity notes that orchestrate nicely with one another coming together with a red wine base.

So the red wine base is already given away and was the starting point of what was to come. Nothing screams Italian like campari and we have become fans of such thanks to our cocktail king neighbours. With it’s infusion of herbs and fruit it was a natural key player in adding the bones of the overall taste. Carrying on with the fruit inspiration is the apple liqueur that adds a dash of deep warm flavouring in place of the brandy.

Sliced apple, peach and strawberries round out the full fruit flavour with addition to apple juice. Not a traditional choice of sweetener, but the results were fantastic.
