Frozen Sake Basil Lemonade

Nothing is more refreshing than a brimming glass filled with a crushed ice cocktail when summer is in full swing. The patio calling for social gatherings and titillating conversation.

This libation initially came about on a hot summer’s day. Wanting to have a blended drink and being short on tequila and rum in the cabinet. I know. To my defense we did have host several barbecues already and the shortage just seemed to progressively happen. We did however have sake! Traditionally sake which was usually drank warmed and with hearty selection of sushi. I was hoping the cold sake would be just as enjoyable in a icy mix.

So the experimenting began! There were other ‘blend’ nights, although very fun, were with not such a success as this cocktail. The hardships of making the perfect cocktail – taste testing! The frozen sake basil lemonade is often made on a late hot afternoon while preparing dinner or when friends are over for a grilled feast.

You may be wondering about the pictures as they are not as elaborate as some of the others in the blog. Well, it is a simple drink with simpler ingredients, but don’t be fooled the flavour is intense.

The sharp tartness of the lemons is prevalent, but the sweet basil adds a mellow tone. Every sip is a different combination of flavours as the basil oils mix more as the ice slowly melts in the glass.

You may adjust the sweetness level by adding simple syrup to the mix to the taste you find right. I personally prefer the classic tartness of the lemons as the recipe lays out.

Frozen Sake Basil Lemonade

The tartness of the lemons and the sweetness of the basil make for a truly unique refreshing cocktail.

  • 4 cups of ice
  • 4 oz sake
  • 5 lemons
  • 6-8 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 cup of tonic water

  1. Combine the ice, sake and the juice from the lemons in a blender. Blend until the ice is crushed and the mixture has thickened.
  2. Lightly muddle the basil leaves with a mortar and pestle or in a glass with the back of a spoon.
  3. Scoop some of the crushed ice mixture into each glass, place the muddled basil and top with another scoop of the crushed ice mixture.
  4. Add 1/4 cup of tonic water into each glass and enjoy.

By placing the basil in the middle of the mixture the oils can mix with throughout the drink quicker. Adjust sweetness by adding simple syrup for a less tart flavour option.
