Neighbourhood Dinner Fare

“If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him… the people who give you their food give you their heart.” -Cesar Chavez

If you are lucky enough to live within walking distance of great culinary possibilities take in the opportunity. We are fortunate enough to have been able to purchase a house that exceeds our expectations and is walking distance to both child care and work. The bonus is it also comes with some fantastic neighbours equally skilled in culinary arts. With their baking, smoked meats, preserving and unique blend of cocktails there is always something going on.

We are part of a 3 neighbour open back yard with hip height fences, which is not so common as fences grow taller and interactions recede. Fortunate to have another set of eyes on kids playing in the backyard and an extra pair of hands always available to assist. It brings me back to my childhood. Growing up with extended family friends who where not afraid to step in to be a great parental influence.

The neighbourhood is creative in it’s own right and prides itself on the diversified portfolio of it’s residents. It boosts some local businesses that serve the residents of the city. It is not uncommon to see people taking in the social aspect of grocery shopping and excitedly gather for the special menus planned out. It reminds me of the bigger cities I have visited where local stores are the place to find your fresh ingredients needed to bring your vision to life.20140521_083132

I must say that it is really handy having a butcher, fish market, chocolaterie and bakery all within the same block and 3 blocks from home. Most larger cities can not boast this convenience. There is also a major grocery store if needed. Theses are some of the reasons our neighbourhood chose us and vice versa.

So now that we know where we are going, lets get our dinner prepared!
